About the Bourne and the Sagamore
The two highway bridges across the Cape Cod Canal are the only way to drive onto the Cape. Both are about 90 years old. Both are owned by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Both will be replaced as part of a project that runs through 2037.
- The Sagamore carries Route 6 over the canal at the eastern end. It’s the busier of the two crossings. Connects to Route 3 from Boston.
- The Bourne carries Route 28 over the canal at the western end. Carries Falmouth and Upper Cape traffic. Connects to I-195 from Providence and points west.
Replacement work starts on the Sagamore in winter 2027 and 2028. The Bourne follows about a year later. Until then, both bridges keep working with regular maintenance windows. More on the project.
Other ways onto the Cape
The bridges carry almost all car and truck traffic. A few alternatives exist for specific trips:

- Provincetown Fast Ferry — Seasonal Boston-Provincetown service via Bay State Cruise Company. boston-ptown.com
