On September 28, 2026, MassDOT took two big steps toward a new Sagamore Bridge.
It asked three teams to bid on the job. And the federal government released $956 million to pay for building it.
The three teams
Whoever wins will both design and build the bridge. One contract, one team. These three made MassDOT’s short list:
- Cape Cod Constructors. Halmar International, D.W. White Construction and SPS New England, working with Jacobs and T.Y. Lin.
- Skanska Traylor Sagamore. Skanska and Traylor Bros., working with AECOM and VHB.
- Walsh Construction, working with WSP.
The search started in March 2026. This is the last round.
What happens next
- May 2027. Final bids are due.
- July 2027. MassDOT opens the bids in public.
- Late 2027. MassDOT hires the winner and tells it to start.
- Winter 2027 to spring 2028. Work starts at the bridge. MassDOT’s September release says winter 2027. Its October FAQ says the big work starts in spring 2028.
- 2033. All Sagamore traffic moves onto the first new bridge. Then the old one comes down.
MassDOT says two lanes each way stay open across the canal the whole time.
The money
The $956 million is not new money. The Sagamore already won its federal grants. This step clears the money to be spent on building the bridge.
MassDOT said it expected the federal government to release another $371 million in mid-October 2026.
The Bourne is a different story. It still has no construction money. MassDOT and the Army Corps have asked for more than $1 billion in federal money for it. They are still waiting on an answer.
Some dates have moved
In 2024, MassDOT put out a schedule for the Sagamore. Here is how it compares to now.
- Asking for bids: planned for fall 2026. It happened in September 2026. On time.
- Federal environmental review: planned for winter 2026. It finished in June 2026.
- Final state and federal permits: planned for spring 2026. MassDOT has not yet said they are all in hand.
- New Sagamore finished: planned for winter 2034. Now 2036.
